ELT08 Innovation Awards

The BBC Learning English Blogs - which run on the platform Ali and I developed - won in the UK category of the ELT08 Innovation Awards.

The Learning English Blogs transform the concept of blogging from an individual pursuit into a collaborative learning process.

The blogs retain a rich vein of individual expression since the ‘student blogger’ writes about topics of interest to them. A ‘teacher blogger’ prepares posts in response to the student’s writings giving feedback on good language use, specific student mistakes and typical language errors, all within the dynamic of a content-based, personalised and meaningful dialogue.

A global audience contributes to the learning by completing the teacher tasks, providing words of encouragement to the student and giving their opinions on not only language use but also the topics under discussion – a rich source of additional material for the teacher.

This process results in a simple one-to-one blogging relationship creating a one-to-many learning environment, that continues long after each blog post.

Heart Buchanan's new BBC lunch delivery service (wot I built) has made the papers:-

Home comforts

HOW are the precious folk at the BBC coping with their move from the refined west end to Govan, you may or may not wonder.

Well, while their neighbours in Govan go down to an ice-cream van for their smokes, Nurofen and single nougats, the BBC types now have a lunchtime van delivery from their favourite deli on Byres Road which they were all missing. They can order their couscous, asparagus and chervil pasta salad, and goats' cheese and sunblushed tomato filo parcels online before 11am and it is delivered two hours later.

And no strident chimes of Greensleeves from the van - the staff are sent an e-mail when it arrives.

Yes, it's tough out there in Govan, but the plucky BBC types are surviving.

Some of my colleagues at BBC Scotland are working at the T in the Park music festival this weekend.

Not only are they streaming Flash video of the performances, they're also chopping many of them up into individual track-size chunks. The results are great and they're available for people to embed into their own websites for the next seven days.

The 300

On Sunday 27 May 2007, I achieved the perfect game at Wii Sports bowling.

I was particularly delighted for two reasons:-

It was done both in competition with three other players and in full view of the majority of my pals; and

It laid to rest the ghost of Super Monkey Bowling (the pressure got to me and I missed my best shot at a maximum by just one strike a couple of years ago).

My technique is to shuffle as far over to the right as possible and bowl straight ahead - but with as much counter-clockwise twist as I can muster. (In Super Monkey Bowling, if I remember correctly, I stayed in the middle, stopped the swinging arm when it was pointing right and used maximum counter-clockwise twist.)

Perhaps I should have just built a robot instead...

Thanks to Sally for the photo.

BBC Radio Scotland redesign

Today the BBC Radio Scotland website - my pet project for the last couple of months - relaunched. Wil was responsible for the new look; Ryan programmed the labour-saving back-end & some of the front end; Carol, Alan and Jo prepared all the content; and I built the rest of the front-end and kinda ran the show.

The new site offers some significant improvements over the old one (live since the summer of 2003!):-

Schedule listings for individual days, the coming week and the previous week - all with Listen Again links where available;

Permanent pages for the station's presenters;

Now & Next listings;

An RSS Feed off all the daily updates from Carol and the team;

No more popups for playlists and email - only the Radio Player launches separately - and a Programme A-Z page to replace what was a dropdown menu;

Predictable, hackable URIs across the whole site and some splendidly semantic markup;
