Battles Old and New
Castle Tioram, 13th C home of Clanranald has been subject of an angry (and lengthy) feud between Ayrshire businessmen Lex Brown and Historic Scotland. Lex claims his efforts to restore the castle have been thwarted by the quango – who he claims are run by a puritanical clique intent on tragic crumbling buildings rather than restorations. So far so very Restoration.
But Lex wasn’t always so interested in issues of cultural conservation. Certainly not while he was arms supplier to ‘Sandline’ and ‘Executive Outcomes’ that provided helpful ‘military services’ to Papua New Guinea, Sierra Leone and Angola.
Kind of takes the edge of your sympathy for the guy doesn't it?
