Where Did They All Go?
Whatever happened to the Tory party? My theory is it just shuttled away under the dark overhanging corners of politics. It was a three way shuffle. The clever ones, the utilitarians (it’s all about efficiency) joined New Labour quickly finding it a comfortable welcoming place full pf familiar sounding policies. The second shuffle - call it the Tebbit Tendency was into places like the UKIP or the BNP. Here a virulent hatred of all things un-British was welcomed. Get-togethers like Golf Club Dinners with a refreshing whiff of rebellion in the air (“I’m not very PC you know!”) The third lot crawled into groups like the Countryside Alliance or their local anti wind-farm lobby where cherished rural values could be manfully upheld.
Where America has neocons we've oldgits.
Classic example is one ex-Tory MP Bill Walker. Bill, widely regarded as being thick as a gatepost, is now heading-up the campaign against Drumderg Wind Farm near Alyth in Perthshire, seen by many as a test case for renewables in Scotland. This week councillors deferred a decision to allow the company (Scottish and Southern Energy) time to address some of the complaints. Walker has been joined in his heroic struggle by Life peer and law lord Lord Hope of Craighead, has also added his name to objections against a proposed renewable energy site at Drumderg.
He’s worried about the grouse apparently. Visit the “Save Our Hills” site here.
