ROCK AROUND THE BLOCKADE
On Sunday 15th August the people of Venezuela went to the polls to voice their support for President Hugo Chavez. They were determined to say to the wealthy elites of their own country and of the United States that it is they, the people, who will decide who runs the country.
The Bolivarian Revolution has meant that the masses of Venezuela have decisively joined the political process. In their millions they have said that the oil wealth of their country is to be used for the benefit of the people.
In Michael Moore’s movie 9/11 we see President Bush arrogantly and shamelessly describe the rich people around him as his base. In Venezuela it is the poor of the cities, the landless labourers of the countryside and the masses of working people that President Chavez calls his base. In spite of the BBC’s biased coverage of anti-Chavez demonstrations, 69% of the Venezuelan population emerged to vote in favour of their leader. International Observers have confirmed the candid nature of the referendum for the third time this week.
Venezuela’s oil revenues have been used to fund land distribution, health care and education programs for the people. Last month, President Chavez announced the start of a new free food program to provide for the poor adults and street children. Altogether, 4,000 food houses will be built to service 600,000 in extreme poverty by November.
The Cuban Revolution has given practical solidarity to the Venezuelans. Socialist Cuba has agreed to send 12,000 doctors and 17,000 teachers as volunteers to assist its Latin American neighbour.
The wealthy of Venezuela and the United States do not like these developments. They will continue to conspire to overthrow the new democratic revolution there. For 45 years Cuba has defended its own socialist revolution from its former corrupt elite and the US government. Cuba has succeeded in building a more just and fairer society. The people of Venezuela have begun to follow the same path to justice. We support this movement and the vital and necessary challenge to imperialism that it represents.
