SLUSH PUPPY TV
The death of actor Christopher Reeves (“Superman”) has led to another of those Diana-moments. Irrational emotionalism out of proportion of the act, the actual experience. It’s also part of a worrying trend that doesn’t just confuse but actually blends drama with reality. The guy obviously was kind of brave and resisted er, dying, for a while and well that’s about it.
Imagine if he’d been brave and resisted dying but had played a baddie, or a really sad hopeless character. It wouldn’t work so well would it?
The cult of personality and celebrity is a dead dog round our neck.
Same goes with that awful drivel the West Wing, now beamed out to us on Channel 4 every Friday night. Last week the big debate was the format of the presidential debates. Sound familiar? Now the show doesn’t just stand in a dramatic dialogue with real-life scenarios it mimics and manipulates it. The show is full of pretty white women and really clever men, all with the ethics of a saint and the principles of Martin Luther King. It’s slush-puppy tv for thick liberals.
Whilst Arnie runs California and leaders with the morals of a snake run the country you can settle down and pretend.
Aw Superman’s dead….but at least Josiah Bartlet’s in the White House. Goodnight John Boy. Good night Mary-Ellen.
