NUCLEAR PLANT IN CONTAMINATION SHOCK!
The Scottish media went into a tailspin yesterday when it was revealed that yet another rotten mass of nuclear industrial waste had contaminated the land around it. It's going to take 85 years to clear up the mess around Hunterston B. Shock Horror Probe! Whatever next, Bush in stupidity revelation? Labour in corruption charges, bears caught in defecating in wooded areas?
Friends of the Earth have called for urgent checks for contamination on land around all nuclear power stations. The demand follows the unexpected discovery of a massive amount (81,000 cubic metres) of radioactive contamination on land surrounding the Hunterston nuclear power plants in Ayrshire.
Friends of the Earth Chief Executive, Duncan McLaren, said:
"The amount of contamination is simply staggering. The fact that it has gone undetected for years is even more worrying. Urgent checks are needed at all nuclear plants to discover if similar contamination has gone undetected. Workers at the plant and those living near to nuclear facilities must be reassured they have not been unwittingly exposed to radioactive contamination. Despite decades of support and billions of pounds in public subsidy nuclear power remains an uneconomic, unsafe and unwanted energy technology. Those who think new nuclear power plants should be built should think again."
Will it put the kybosh on New Labours plans for new nuclear plants? Nah.
