MADDOG POLICE CHIEFS
Sometimes you just have to blink and give yourself a shake, such are the weird (un) realities of present day politics. Statements and actions that a few year back would have been thought unthinkable are now rolled out as everyday.
The comments of Tom Buchanan president of the Association of Scottish Police Superintendents are simply amazing. That one of Scotland’s most senior police officers has backed calls for householders to have the legal right to kill or injure intruders in order to defend their homes and families is so massively irresponsible and crazy as to defy belief.
Buchanan was backing up his boss (Sir John Stevens) idea that there should be a statutory duty on prosecutors and the courts to presume the force someone used in their home against a violent intruder was within the law, unless the facts clearly disproved this, he said.
Doubtless all this is pitched up by the tabloids as knockabout stuff criticised only by fuzzy liberals but really the reality of such measures are uncontrollable. It all feeds in to the sort of mad dog-eat-dog world we’ve created that’s increasingly feeling like your just mushing around in some kind of faithless neo-liberal barbarism.
Oh god. Maybe it’s just that Monday feeling.
