SMILE
It’s a wonderful conceit to say, you can have partial controls over your affairs, but not describe them in your own media. So a chortle is due for the news that:
'Scottish ITV viewers could be set to receive their own 10.30pm news bulletin under new proposals from Grampian Television and STV, which would see the traditional bulletin fronted by newscaster Sir Trevor McDonald disappearing from TVs north of the border. Under the broadcasters’ plans for the future, national and international stories would be covered from a Scottish perspective, although the bulletin itself would be broadcast from London, with ITN editing Scottish reporters’ news footage.
A spokeswoman for Grampian Television said: “The proposed programme would have exactly the same look and feel as the existing UK bulletin but would have more relevant editorial for Scottish viewers.
“ITN would retain editorial control but would liaise closely with Grampian and Scottish TV.
“This will go a long way to address the anomaly of stories specific to England and Wales being given the same level of priority for viewers in Scotland, even though their content does not apply north of the border.
“At the moment we have got stories that have no relevance to Scotland.”
Watch-out for a ruddy-faced Brian Wilson appearing incandescent on your screens any minute, denouncing ITV, Scotland, Oor Wullie and anyone who has the temerity not to bow to Ukania, sing Rule Britannia and immediately start erecting nuclear power stations to, er, save the world! Expect the debate about devolving broadcasting to be re-ignited, irate letters to be penned in self-hatred to the Scotsman, and er, probably a half-assed news programme with lots of big pictures shown behind gormless presenters. What illustration could you use for 'sham democracy' or 'washed up politician'?
