Ban Depleted Uranium Weaponry
A group calling themselves Bomb22Bomb have launched a weekend of Action (5th and 6th November Buchanan St, Glasgow, start times 12.00pm) against depleted uranium weaponry ‘To raise awareness of the subject of depleted uranium (DU), and how British Armed forces have used radioactive waste as a weapon of war in both Gulf Wars, the Balkans and Afghanistan.’ This weapon, converted into shells and missiles, not only kills soldiers but kills civilians and pollutes the environment for millions of years. Wherever DU has been used there has been huge increases in cancers, birth defects and numerous other killer illnesses. It is also widely believed that DU is a major factor in Gulf War Syndrome, the mystery condition that has struck down thousands of veterans of the 1st Gulf War. Although the British Ministry of Defence will deny it, DU acts likes a weapon of mass destruction, causing health and environmental damage look after a conflict has ended. Scotland also boasts the only open-air testing site for DU munitions, in Dundrennan, South-West Scotland. Over 30 tonnes of radioactive waste have been fired into the Solway Firth since the 1980s, and Dundrennan is littered with burnt-out tanks and other objects used as target practice for Challenger tanks. They say: “All welcome to the Weekend of Action, whether peace groups, anti-war groups, environmental groups, or concerned individuals wanting to learn more and contribute to this campaign. Bring your own placards, leaflets and ideas.” Scotland UXB has created an interactive map of the military presence in Scotland, go here to see the extent of the occupation. Go here to see the map.
