M74 Disaster
“You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs” - Duncan Tannahill, former Chief executive of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.
“Why is it the same peoples’ eggs are always getting broken?” - Local resident.
Britain's biggest motorway-building project, the £500m Glasgow M74 motorway extension, has been voted the country's 'Worst Planning Decision' it was announced today. The annual Carbuncle awards are organised by leading architecture and design magazine - Prospect.
Earlier this year, Friends of the Earth and the JAM74 coalition began an appeal against the Scottish Executive. The legal action followed the Executive's decision to reject the independent Reporters' recommendation that the road should not be built. The groups are now busy raising the funds they will need to fight the case in court next June.
Friends of the Earth Scotland's Chief Executive, Duncan McLaren, said: "Of course, the best way for the Executive to ensure it wins no similar accolades would be to drop the proposal for good. However, if they still want to press aheadm we believe that this crazy scheme can still be halted. That is why are now busy raising funds to take the Executive to court."
Will Jess, Chair of JAM74 said: "JAM74 is really pleased that the M74 has won this award! It shows that the Scottish architectural community and public at large agree with us that this monster motorway should never be built. The Scottish Executive should re-assess their position and cancel the M74 and give us a planning decision to be proud of."
