Katrina, Wilma and H5N1
I'm in bed with the flu (hopefully not the first case of H5N1 in the UK, though I am feeling abit peckish)... and I've decided to become vegetarian. I've heard the smug arguments from Doctors and 'experts' that there is "little or no chance of humans getting it from eggs or chicken meat because any virus is killed in cooking" and remain convinced technically but not ethically.
I've read the arguments that it's all a big hoax to make Rumsfeld millions (see Rumsfeld/Aspartame/Gilead here... )
I've even read the argument that the whole thing is a big Psyops Neocon wheeze...see Nico Haupt here.
But the latest disaster of our industrial food chain just seems one of those passing moments of overwhelming evidence of our betrayal that can't go unmarked by any personal response. We've cleaved ourselves so far from the natural world and are paying in every aspect of our lives.
We have come to the point where we are scared of something as fundamental as as migrating birds. We've fogotten the truth in what Reclus said, that all we are is: "...nature rendered self-concious". See Reclus on Vegetarianism here.
And so the news that 'Gilead', the pharmaceutical company that developed ‘Tamiflu’, the supposed antidote to the Bird Flu virus was chaired by none other than Donald Rumsfeld is just another detail.
The news that the Americans response is that the 'Pentagon Wants to Own the Weather' (see here):
and this from the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space are just markers of our insane response to our man made catastrophes unravelling before our eyes like a toxic spool...and so I have to say to all my carniverous comrades I
loved eating chicken, chops, sausages, beefburgers, the lot (sorry but I do) but just taking a look (denial can only last so long) and I just can't stomach it.
For me its not about health, or even disease, its more about the karma thing - and a society and culture separated from itself and just the levels of disgust that invokes in me.
