Did the East Fife 5 Forfar 4 scoreline ever actually happen?

As far as I can trace, the only score line similar to this in matches between East Fife and Forfar was Forfar 5 East Fife 4 in a Division Two match on 22 April 1964.

Rachel wins competition

Rumours that John Travolta would put in appearance at last night's launch party for ITV's talent show Grease is the Word remained just that, sadly. Ol' snake hips was otherwise engaged at the Leicester Square premiere for his new movie Wild Hogs. So be-boppers at ITV's Bloomsbury Ballroom bash had to make do with the News of the World's Dan Wootton, who along with colleague Rachel Richardson won the fancy dress prize for being the best Danny and Sandy.

Look, I can spin really fast!

Fresh from the political row over his duping of Margaret Beckett, impressionist Rory Bremner has come up with some fascinating insights into Alastair Campbell and his own tactics with the fourth estate. "Alastair Campbell once objected to the way he was shown in my series and actually said to me: 'who's that fat bastard playing me?'. [It was actor Andrew Dunn]. He then showed me his exercise routine, bench presses and running and so on to prove how fit he was. But soon after that there was a story in the Express saying that we were thinking of getting rid of Andrew Dunn because he was too fat. There were only two people having that conversation and I certainly didn't tell the Express that. It showed how he works."

A great perspective on motivations at work

...one can be passionate about their employer and the work they do, but it's a matter of which one employers value. And all too often, it's the wrong one. The simple 4-quesetion(sic) test to see if someone has a passion for their work:

  • When was the last time you read a trade/professional journal or book related to your work? (can substitute "attended an industry conference or took a course")
  • Name at least two of the key people in your field.
  • If you had to, would you spend your own money to buy tools or other materials that would improve the quality of your work?
  • If you did not do this for work, would you still do it (or something related to it) as a hobby?

Bees

While the sting can also penetrate the flexible exoskeletal joints in appendages of other insects (and is used in fights between queens), defense against other insects such as predatory wasps is usually performed by surrounding the intruder with a mass of defending workers, who vibrate their muscles so vigorously that it raises the temperature of the intruder to a lethal level. This is also used to kill a queen perceived as intruding or defective, an action known to beekeepers as balling the queen, named for the ball of bees formed.

Measure the Measure

There is an optimum width for a Measure and that is defined by the amount of characters are in the line. A general good rule of thumb is 2-3 alphabets in length, or 52-78 characters (including spaces). This is for legibility purposes.

British scientists grow human liver in a laboratory

The liver tissue is created from stem cells - blank cells capable of developing into different types of tissue - found in blood from the umbilical cord.

Working in collaboration with experts from the US, the Newcastle scientists succeeded in separating out the stem cells from blood removed from the umbilical cord minutes after birth.

They are then placed in a 'bioreactor' - a piece of electrical equipment developed by NASA to mimic the effects of weightlessness. Inside this, the freedom from the force of gravity allows them to multiply more quickly than usual.

Then, various hormones and chemicals are added to coax the stem cells into turning into liver tissue.

830! How a Massachusetts carpenter got the highest scrabble score ever

On Oct. 12, in the basement of a Unitarian church on the town green in Lexington, Mass., a carpenter named Michael Cresta scored 830 points in a game of Scrabble. His opponent, Wayne Yorra, who works at a supermarket deli counter, totaled 490 points. The two men set three records for sanctioned Scrabble in North America: the most points in a game by one player (830), the most total points in a game (1,320), and the most points on a single turn (365, for Cresta's play of QUIXOTRY).

Why does orange juice taste so bad after brushing your teeth?

It's because of a certain ingredient in toothpaste called sodium laurel sulfate. It actually blocks sweet sensors. All the other taste bud cells in your mouth are firing away nicely, but the receptors which pick up the sweet sensors are not working anymore. Not only does it block the sweet sensors, it enhances the sour and bitter, so you get this massive influx of sour and bitter taste coming through the mouth.
